Individual Sessions
We offer one-on-one tailored music therapy sessions to support growth and development for pre-schoolers, primary school-aged children, teens and young adults. We use a neuro-affirming, trauma-informed and disability positive lens. We work with children and young people who have a variety of needs.
Pre-school and Primary

Sessions for pre-schoolers and primary-aged children may be offered in the caravan on school site, providing that the school is able to host the caravan and there are three or more children at the school who wish to access our services for individual sessions. Where it isn’t possible to use the caravan, we may still be able to work on school site if your child’s school has a suitable room we can use and is happy to allow your child to use some school instruments. A further option is for you to bring your child to Mana Therapy Hub, where we have a large music therapy room. We may also offer to start sessions at the Hub whilst we wait for caravan or school availability.
All our sessions are neuro-affirming, trauma-informed and disability positive. We use a play-based approach, following children’s strengths and interests, and tailor sessions to meet their individual needs. Where appropriate we encourage peer involvement. We use inclusive practices to optimise your child’s potential and maximise their sense of belonging within their communities.
We usually begin individual sessions with an assessment to get to know your child, their strengths and their musical preferences, as well as to identify what needs they might have and how music therapy might support them. Following assessment, we liaise with parents, school teams and where possible the young person themselves, to identify key areas where support may be required and use music to support growth and development.

Teens and Young Adults
Sessions for teens and young adults are usually offered in the music therapy room at Mana Therapy Hub. All our sessions are neuro-affirming, trauma informed and disability positive. With our young people, we use a person-centred and resource-oriented approach to their music therapy journey.
We usually begin individual sessions with an assessment to get to know the young person, their strengths and their musical preferences, as well as to identify what needs they might have and how music therapy might support them. Following assessment, we collaborate with the young person, and where appropriate with the key people in their lives, to identify areas where support might be required.
Sometimes, adaptive music lessons might be a suitable option for teens and young adults. We currently offer adaptive piano lessons for young people who show a keen interest in learning keyboard skills and require additional support to make learning an instrument accessible.

Short-term work
From time to time, individual short term music therapy work may be more appropriate and we may offer a block of sessions (usually for a 10 week term).
Reasons why short term music therapy work might be offered include:
- A time-defined purpose for music therapy, for example supporting transition to a new syndicate or school
- A ‘top up’ of therapy support for previous Little Musical Caravan tamariki
- In family therapy work, where the focus is to resource parents to support their preschooler using music
- When therapy work starts late in the year, and there is insufficient time to run a music therapy assessment and begin the music therapy work
- If you access ‘taster’ sessions at Awesome Bounce through the Āhuru Mōwai Trust
When short-term work is completed, we will email a brief summary of music therapy sessions. This is included in the cost of the weekly sessions. Should you require a full written report, this can be arranged but will be at a cost of $126.50 ($110 + GST) per hour.
