Music Therapy for Children and Families

Every child is unique, with their own identity, interests, and natural way of communicating. At the Little Musical Caravan, we offer play-based, neuroaffirming music therapy and adaptive music experiences for children, teens, and young adults across Porirua, Kāpiti, and the Wellington region.

Through our Mobile Caravan, Mana Therapy Hub (Porirua), Kāpiti Studio, and onsite school visits, we design every session around what your child loves – whether that means writing songs, exploring instruments, creating stories through puppet play, or simply making sound together.

How Music Therapy Supports Your Child

Music is a powerful, non-pressured way for young people to connect, explore, and grow. Through child-led musical play, we help your child build skills that support their daily life and wellbeing:

Building confidence and authentic self-expression:

We help children find joy in sharing their unique voice. Whether playing rhythms on the drums or writing songs, your child learns that their ideas are valued and heard.

Supporting sensory and emotional regulation:

Music provides a natural anchor for the nervous system. We use steady rhythms, gentle melodies, and predictable routines to help children manage sensory needs, ground themselves, and process big feelings safely.

Fostering genuine social connection:

Shared music-making offers a pathway for communication without the need for words. Through turn-taking games and joint improvisation, young people develop meaningful social connections and form authentic relationships at their own pace.

Encouraging individual choice and control:

Our sessions are child-led. We create a safe space where your child guides the direction of play, helping them build agency, self-advocacy, and independence.

What Happens in a Session?

You might wonder what a typical session looks like for your child. Because we follow your child’s lead, no two sessions are exactly the same! However, most sessions include a few core elements to help your child feel safe and grounded:

  1. A Predictable Opening: We begin with a familiar ‘Hello’ song to establish focus, ease transitions, and set a calm, welcoming tone.

  2. Child-Led Musical Exploration: Your child can choose from a wide variety of instruments – such as keyboards, drums, and percussion – or bring a familiar song they would like to explore together.

  3. Improvisation and Play: We might create songs on the spot, invent puppet characters, or play interactive music games that match your child’s mood and energy.

  4. A Grounding Closure: We close with a dedicated ‘Goodbye’ song to signal the end of the session and support a gentle, healthy transition back to school or home.
